Vitamins
for the Brain
Every one of the known
essential vitamins except vitamin D plays a role in
promoting brain fitness. Almost every vitamin is a brain
vitamin. The most critical ones are described
below.
The B
vitamins. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) helps turn
glucose (fuel for the brain) into energy. People low in
B1 have poor attention spans and concentration. Thiamine
supplementation has been shown to increase reaction time
and mental energy. Vitamin B3 (niacin) supplementation
(140 mg / day) improves memory by more than 10%, and can
reduce the risk of cognitive
aging and dementia by half. Vitamin B5 is a
memory booster. Vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid are
essential in production of neurotransmitters, and help
improve memory, and are an effective treatment for mental
disorders such as autism and ADHD. They are essential in
pregnancy. Children born to mothers deficient in folic acid show delayed intellectual
development.
Vitamin
E &
Vitamin C are
antioxidants and help counter oxidation in cells, brain
toxicity & brain cell death. Vitamin E is a highly
effective antioxidant. In the elderly, decreased levels of
vitamin E are associated with poorer memory. Vitamin C has been
shown to reduce symptoms of
depression.
