Folic Acid Folic Acid Brain Nutrient

Dietary Sources: Folic acid - also known as B9 - is found in fortified cereals, beef liver, lentils, orange juice, chickpeas and spinach.

Brain Effects: Adequate levels of folic acid are essential for brain function. Folic acid deficiency can lead to brain disorders such as depression. Research has shown that t hose  having a clear folate deficiency showed an incidence of mood disturbances of >50%.

Folic acid deficiency has been linked to deficits in learning and memory, particularly in the elderly.

In a 3-year trial on over 800 people over the age of 50, memory, information processing speed, and sensori-motor speed were all found to be better among people who took 800 micrograms of folic acid supplement daily -twice the current recommended daily amount (RDA). The study was reported in The Lancet  in 2007.
