Choline Brain
Supplement / Lecithin Brain Supplement - for
Pregnant
Mothers
Choline
is classified as a water soluble
essential nutrient. the
precursor to the important neurotransmitter,
acetylcholine. The synthesis of
acetylcholine is influenced by the availability of
choline within neurons (brain cells). Choline
concentrations in brain cells can be increased by
choline supplementation - either in the form of
CDP-Choline (Citicoline) or , phosphatidylcholine - more
commonly known as
lecithin.
Sources: Choline is found in high
concetrations in egg yolks & fresh
sardines.
Brain development effects of choline
brain
supplement
The most interesting scientific
evidence for the brain effects of choline are on
brain development of the foetus
during
pregnancy.
Choline is critical during fetal
development, when it influences neurogenesis, thereby altering brain
structure and function. Based on animals models, there is
evidence that memory may be permanently enhanced in
individuals who's mothers take choline supplementation,
relative to those who are deficient in
choline.
Dietary deficiency
of choline significantly changes the structure of memory
centers - including the hippocampus -- by
reducing brain cell division, changing cell migration and
by increasing the number of cells that die
prematurely. See Science
Daily article here.
"For the first time we
have shown that the very structure of brain is
influenced by what the mothers eat during pregnancy
and that this
specific nutrient choline appears to be
critical,"
Dr.
Dr. Steven Zeisel, chair of nutrition
at the UNC-CH schools of public health and
medicine.
