Brain
Plasticity
Training
Brain
plasticity (also known as cortical plasticity or
neuroplasticity) is the ability of the brain to reorganize
itself – forming new brain cells and new information processing
connections between those cells, and new functions for those
cells. Brain plasticity training results when
through training the brain's organization is changed or new
neurons are created.
When Does
Brain Plasticity Occur?
Neuroplasticity is
known to occur in the brain in the following
situations:
♦ During
infancy and childhood, and into young adulthood: when the
immature brain organizes
itself.
- ♦ Through
adulthood: whenever we form a new memory, learn something
new, or develop a new skill. This includes
brain plasticity training.
- ♦ In response
to brain injury, disease or genetic brain disorders
such as blindness: to compensate for lost functions or
maximize remaining
functions.
Recent
evidence
demonstrates that the brain is capable of
remarkable widespread
change and adaptation throughout the
lifespan– much more than had previously been
thought.
Effective brain plasticity
training: Change neuron connections by training your
intelligence
In 2008
a brain training exercise was successfully developed
by a team of scientists working in the University of Bern
(Switzerland) and the University of Michigan (USA) that has
been demonstrated to increase the power of what is
called fluid
intelligence –
our ability to reason and problem solve in new situations.
Training with this software has also been shown to increase
neural activity in part of the pre-frontal cortex
known to be involved in higher cognitive functioning. It also
results in lasting changes to the brain (brain plasticity)
increasing the of receptors for
dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in
higher cognition - in the frontal
lobe.
This is called
synaptic
plasticity –
it occurs in the connections between individual brain cells
(neurons). This process can be seen in the diagram below
which shows two neurons. The first releases the chemical
dopamine into the 'gap' between the two neurons called the
'synapse'. It is then detected by specialized 'receptors' in
the second neuron which activates the neuron. More of these
receptors are created as a result of IQ training with our
software.
